Loving MudBlazor but need a fully-featured PDF viewer/annotator component like Syncfusion's
MudBlazor has been my go-to framework for Blazor and I absolutely love it. But this new project I'm working on has one important feature requirement that MudBlazor alone can't do: an in-page PDF vieweannotator. I know Syncfusion seems to have a very mature one: Overview of Blazor PDF Viewer Component | Syncfusion My understanding is that something like this would be quite hard to write from scratch and Syncfusion's component likely drew on their experience working with that kind of stuff for a very long time. But switching to an entirely new framework I've never used before, is paid/commercial in nature (despite the community license), with an overall visual styling that I consider to be less clean/appealing than MudBlazoMaterial, just for this single component, sounds like a big compromise to me. Yet the PDF stuff is needed. Does anyone have experience working with this scenario? I'm thinking maybe it's possible to use Blazor's JS interop to plug in another existing JS-based PDF component, but for a complicated component like this, will it work reliably? I did find that pspdfkit has a Blazor SDK but I heard their stuff is very expensive. Lack of pricing info and predatory sales practices, etc. But if anyone has used them and can share some general experience and pricing info that'd be great, too. Your advice would be truly appreciated!
All the pdf viewers for Linux that I have used are oddly lacking. The rundown of what I've used over the years: Evince: Slow to load pages and doesn't support general sized windows Foxit: Nice and fast but again doesn't allow windows to be bellow a certain size. Text also flickers while scrolling. Web Browser Pdf readers (Chrome, Firefox... Edge? (nahh who are we kidding)): SLOW and text flickers BADLY while scrolling. Tried this on lots of machines and always the same result. I've used several others over the years as well and most of them look like they were made in the 1990s and had similar issues to those mentioned above. Is there really no PDF reader option for Linux that has performance comparable to adobe acrobat reader?
What do you want from a PDF viewer designed for reading math books?
During my PhD, I was so frustrated with jumping between references in math books that I developed my own open source PDF viewer called sioyek. Anyway, I am interested in ideas about new features/extensions that you feel is missing.
Would anyone else like to see a PDF viewer in future versions of Onion for game manuals and art books?
I think it's awesome to have video/audio players and image/text viewers, but would love to see a pdf viewer in the future! Is anyone else wanting that feature? An epub reader would be nice to have as well, but less important to me than the PDF viewer. Not sure how to request features from the developers of Onion, but I figure if enough people show interest here it may reach them!
v Okular v Evince too. I've just never hard of them. Foxit and Sumtra I have. It's for viewing PDFs, not editing. But occasionally a PDF with fillable forms comes in. If it can handle that, great. Otherwise, Acrobat will work. Why? Because Acrobat 2022 is 64-bit I believe. That doesn't allow 32-bit Reader. 64-bit Reader is some variation of Acrobat, but it's not Reader anymore. Having Acrobat 2022 and 64-bit Reader isn't going to work. But I would like my users to still have a PDF viewer. So Foxit or Sumtra (or Okular or Evince). Acrobat is paid and requires an Adobe ID sign in. I don't even feel like signing into Acrobat just to view a PDF when I do still want a standalone program to show me that PDF. Completely free? Scales up? Ability to disable automatic updates? Has a standard msi file or something you can use to automate installs and uninstalls? Can handle autofill PDF forms? If I had to guess, my answer is, "Yes." Foxit or Sumtra can do all that, and it doesn't really matter.
